the smuggler’s bible

Tierney uses a small spade and—working from the inside out—builds up a defensive fortification. He means to thwart the barbarians. He means for them to stay thwarted.

Spears and arrows clatter harmlessly against his wall. When night falls, he creeps out to collect the spent missiles to use as firewood. He removes the metal points and adds them to his hoard. The treasure pile grows, and Tierney is in awe of it—he pays obeisance every morning before breakfast.

Someday the attacks will cease. Someday the rain will come and fill his moat. Someday he will be safe.
