the smuggler’s bible

The new year has scent and color. Petre sets out to catalog each in small glass vials which he leaves on the shelf so that when light comes through the window in the morning he can sit in a chair and see them shine.

“Jesus,” his roommate says, “you don’t find it a little bit tacky?”

“I think it’s important to be proactive.”

“About what?”

“Perspective, I guess.”

Petre dusts the bottles every week. He is careful and does not miss the crevices. “Make it brand new,” he whispers, leaning in. “Please, 2017, make it all have been worth something.”
