It’s all a game, of course, but there are rules. Gisela has to follow them, at least for a little while yet.

The secret is to stick to the trail as close as you can. She knocks some more glass out of the basement window, then squeezes through into the mist. A boat is waiting at the shore. There had to be. That’s in the rules, too.

She lays the sword across her knees and grabs the oars. She doesn’t remember the way—not exactly. But she figures that doesn’t really matter if you know what you’re getting yourself into.
