the smuggler’s bible

Simon Magus

The man’s name is Simon Magus, but they have to run his fingerprints against the database to find out. He calls the woman his wife. There aren’t any documents to prove that. The database doesn’t have anything to say about it because her hands are listed under unrecoverable in the coroner’s report.

Magus is crying when they tell him. “It’s perfect,” he murmurs. “She always knows just what to do.”

“Absolute Yuletide nonsense.” Pontchartrain shrugs on her coat on the way out of the office. “It’s psychotic.”

“It’s Christmas,” Barraclough says, hitting the lights. “To some people, that means sacrifice.”
