But, sort of annoyingly, the fact that something is normal doesn’t mean it is not also a dire foretelling.

It isn’t fair. That’s just how it works. All you can do is take stock after worse events transpire and attempt to draw the straight line backwards, tracing the graph until you discover the moment of spiraling disequilibrium.
