the smuggler’s bible

Charity

Charity is waiting at the corner when the jagged, high-score tetris board of the sidewalk crowd separates like a zipper has been pulled.

“Oh, shit,” she says.

“Hey, sweetheart.” Satan steps onto the curb. He’s wearing tortoiseshell glasses and a chambray shirt. His hair looks amazing.

“I said I never wanted to see you again.”

“Coincidence, I promise.”

“Okay.”

“I mean, there is one little thing.”

“No.”

“That’s fair, and I totally get it.” Satan presses the button under the crossing signal and the light changes instantly. “But you know it wouldn’t really be temptation unless you heard the offer.”
