the smuggler’s bible

Darcie

The house has collapsed entirely, if not literally, the night Darcie leaves. Russell refuses to stop falling in love with every girl who shops at the ethical food co-op. This, in turn, has driven Zenaide into a jealous spiral of affected nonchalance, winding silently tighter and tighter toward deadly confrontation.

There’s a math term for that, Darcie thinks. Asymptotic or something. Useless as an insult in a fight with your roommates. Easier just to flee.

It’s a fine evening. She can hear the choir singing hallelujah as she crests the hill by the church on her way out of town.
